Below is a link to notes taken from one of the keynote speeches at the Search Marketing Expo 2008 going on right now. There is some interesting stuff about the evolution of search and where it is heading. The part about blended search and personalized search is especially relevant to search marketers. It really is changing the whole ballgame.

I am not sure what I think about the Search 4.0. While I like the idea of personalization wherever I go (links that pick up key words in my e-mail, iGoogle, etc), I'm not so sure I want my searches to be tailored to what the search engine "thinks" I like. Sometimes I want information or material that is much different from my usual taste. I really like movies, and I am constantly looking stuff up on imdb.com. I notice that every time I search in Google for a movie, an actor, a TV show, or what have you, the imdb page is one of the first few links that shows up - and I'm fine with that. However, I don't want Google to put five or six movie sites in my list when I search for something like "office supplies," thinking what I'm really looking for is Office Space or The Office or something...Maybe it's stupid, but I don't want Google to think it knows what I want...all the time anyway.
There is a search engine that I visit everyday (not in English), but recently the site offered an interesting function.
When I click a news article, at the bottom (sometimes middle) of the page, it tells me the most popular demographic information who read the same article. Ex) 20s, male, in Austin things like that…and diagrams.
It’s fun to check the people who have a same interest with me, but I guess the idea came from smart advertisers who wanted to pop different ad windows based on the data.
